sponsors and teachers

Dear Teachers, Parents, and Mentors,

Thank you so much for sponsoring a student in Bow Seat’s Ocean Awareness Student Contest! We are so appreciative of the work you do to inspire, educate, and engage teens in ocean advocacy and the arts. We absolutely could not be doing what we are doing without you. Thank you!

Your Responsibilities as a Sponsor

Whether you are a teacher who assigned this Contest as a class project, a parent helping your child explore their creative potential, or an adult who was asked to be a sponsor for a student submitting on their own, your responsibilities are simple: all we need is to be able to contact you in case we have problems getting in touch with your sponsored student. When your student submits their work, they will be asked to provide your name and email address. You will receive a confirmation email once they submit so that you can have it on record as well.

Being an advocate requires developing effective messaging skills and composing persuasive arguments that contribute to change. However you choose to do it, we encourage you to use your relationship with your student as a way to help each other practice talking about climate change and how the arts can make a meaningful difference in our world.

Bringing the Contest into the Classroom

Our participating teachers come from all disciplines and often use the Contest as a final project. We encourage you, when possible, to work beyond your classroom and invite another teacher to collaborate! You can combine Math + Art, History + Creative Writing, Chemistry + English, or Environmental Science + Social Studies, etc.

We have compiled some resources to help you and your student(s) get started. The linked pages include images, articles, podcasts, videos, websites, and more to help you and your student learn more about issues related to climate change and our oceans that may inform their submission.

I am a teacher with many submissions from my class. Can I submit on their behalf?

Yes. You may create a single account under your name and submit multiple entries on behalf of your class, but you must submit separate entries for each individual student, unless they are participating as a group.
